Firefightin' Sam
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (September, 2002)
Average review score:

It was engaging and entertainingI thoroughly enjoyed Firefightin' Sam by Michael J. Hughes. It was engaging and entertaining. I think Hughes did a wonderful job of portraying the dilemmas kids face when their friends put them in questionable situations. As I read the scene when Sam is deciding whether or not to pull the fire alarm and his friends are calling him a chicken and clucking around him, I was unwillingly thrust back onto the playground during my elementary years. Hughes painted a perfect picture of the peer pressure kids face and the decisions, good or bad, which follow.
I was equally as impressed with the way in which Hughes handled the punishments given to Sam. I liked the creativity coupled with the educational aspect. He was given work detail at the school and a daily work routine at the firehouse.
The descriptions of the activities in the firehouse are incredibly interesting. I found myself taking time to read the charts and figuring out the questions the chief was asking Sam. I think kids will love this portion of book because of the insiders' look you get of a firefighter's life. I would highly recommend this book.

Firefly: The Many Faces of Courage
Published in Paperback by WinePress Publishing (June, 2002)
Average review score:

Be Entertained while you LEARNThe big surprise of this book is the ease of its prose, that takes the slow-moving day to day happenings of the American Revolution and makes it suspenseful in a way that it, in reality, may not have been. Additionally, the reader learns SO MUCH about the technical and strategic aspects of this early war -- we all take for granted that it was fought...and we won...but have we ever stopped to consider what that victory consisted of? Have you ever asked yourself how scraggly, uncoordinated Americans managed to overcome the highly-developed British army? Read on, learn, and you will be truly proud to be an American...a perfect companion for much of the patriotism that surrounds the anniversary of September 11th.

Forgetting Ted Hughes (Pale Ale Poets)

David Foster Wallace if he was a she......except that Jane Cassady is completely different. Cassady uses Post-modernistic images that evoke Kant, the Confessional Poets and pop music in such a way as to make the outrageous metaphoric leaps and connections herein seem completely logical. There is a literateness to her work that belays the fact that most poets who would dare reference Pretty in Pink and the Cure are basically shallow. Cassady is not. Cassady may well be one of tomorrows poetic greats.

Fountain Street Heat
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (May, 2000)
Average review score:

the heat builds upWhen I started to read FOUNTAIN STREET HEAT I suspected a mild little story about a poor little black girl who eventually makes good in a white world. WHAT A SURPRISE. I soon discovered that the heat builds slowly - steadily - and with so much power I could feel it myself. I will read it again in about 6 months - lest I should forget!!
The author uses her adjectives with a powerful descriptive insight. I need to know more about this author - and titles of her future works.

Excellent Study of Internecine Political FightsThis is a remarkable book. It approaches the social psychology of the decision making process in comparative case study form. Since the dynamics, personal and structural, in the Nixon and Carter administrations were so different, it is a useful education in the methodology of waging internecine feuds.

Great for small babies! This book RIVETED my 3-month-old baby. We'd prop the book open to give him tummy time, and he'd stare at each page for minutes on end. When he got a little older, we'd make the sounds for each animal. This book butterly, robin, blackbird, ladybug, spider, worm, caterpillar, and ant. I Farm Animals, Pet Animals, and Garden Animals.
